In this modern day, money is number one. Let’s be honest, we basically need money for almost everything in life. Your parents need to have money to give you birth in a hospital. You need to pay for your food, your house, your utilities. Even in some public places, you need money to pay the entrance fee if you want to go to the toilet. And worst of all, you even need money when you are dead. This case is often for your funeral. And the main solution to get money is for you to get up from your bed, brush your teeth, go take a shower and prepare to go to work. And to get a job, you need to pass the interview.
Hey, guys! Jazz is here. It’s been a while since I post a new article on this website. And for today, I want to share you guys my first interview experience. Here it goes.
Sales Promotion Boy In Jakarta Fair
Okay! So for those who don’t know, Jakarta Fair is the largest fair in Jakarta held annually in Jakarta International Expo in June and July. The fair is meant for celebrating Jakarta anniversary. There are lots of stuff you can check in the fair. Companies are racing to get a spot in Jakarta Fair to promote their product, from vehicles, cosmetics, to foods and beverages. In addition, there is also live entertainment including music, dance, and cultural performances.
Honestly, I have never been there before. And being a sales promotion boy in Jakarta Fair seems to be a great way to gain work experience. It can also be a reason that I can go to Jakarta Fair to check the place out. Usually, companies would hire teenagers from high schools and universities. And they give us a great deal of money per shift.
There is one time when I went to my cousin’s house. We were learning about Math and English for our school exam. But Indonesians, especially the teenagers, are professional procrastinators (This is meant for a joke only). So we learned for about 30 mins (even in the period, we were mostly playing games), and after that, we hung out in a cafe. There we talked about future plans and stuff. And we said goodbye to ourselves at about 4 pm to go home.
Two days later, he told me about a job vacancy in Jakarta Fair. It was said that Energen, Torabika Coffee, and Beng Beng wanted to have sales promotion boys and girls. The payment per shift was Rp175,000.00 (or about $12/shift), which was a great deal for me. That was my chance to get my first work experience. And I told him that I would come to the interview.
So I rushed in making my resume. And on the next day, my cousin and I went to Pasar Baru for the interview. We expected the applicants would be a lot. But in our surprise, there are thousands of people. I scouted the place for a quick entrance, and I found one. But when I saw the line, imagining it gave me creeps. So I went back to my line and waited until the endpoint. Now I was disappointed in myself because I didn’t see the end point. Turned out, the endpoint was a lift onto next lines. If I knew this earlier, my cousin and I would be interviewed faster. And when we arrived on the 6th floor, man it’s like the line of death. I never knew that I would know how hell feels like. It was hot, low oxygen, crowded, dense, and worst of all, more and more people came to the line.
Finally, it was our turn to be in the interview room, yet we still need to wait. So I took a seat in front, and by a fraction of second, the hiring managers called ten people on the seats in front. The managers asked us before we move on to the interview. “If the slot is full, who would mind being a helper instead?”, the manager said. I raised my hand knowing I can’t be a helper as I would go home later than being a sales promotion boy. And so the interview began. And now, we all are waiting for the result.
So being in an interview is one of the best (and maybe worst) things that I have felt. This is a whole new experience for me to be more successful in future interviews. My heart pumped really fast at that time, almost making me nervous. But nonetheless, I still believe in myself that I can get through it.
As long as you keep going, you’ll keep getting better. And as you get better, you gain more confidence. That alone is success.
Anyways, that’s it for now. Have a nice day! 😀
